A History of Storth Oaks Angus

Storth Oaks is a North Island hill country property located 20 kms east of Otorohanga in the Northern King Country of New Zealand. Tim Brittain the present owner has farmed the property since 1980, although adjoining land was added in 1986.

The property is presently 384 hectares. For the winter of 2008 we are carrying 1000 breeding ewes mated to a terminal sire, and 171 MA stud Angus cows, 73 Rising 2 Yr VIC heifers as well as their supporting stock.

Storth Oaks has been a registered Angus Stud since 1991, when we purchased 37 in calf cows at the Holyrood dispersal. A short while later we added 20 two year heifers from the Waitomo Stud. This has given us a very solid base from two long established King Country Studs to build on and we have subsequently selected high-ranking cows at the Lairdvale, Totara Hills, and Parakowai dispersal’s as well as strategic additions from the Te Mania and Waitapu Herds.

In April 1999 we purchased leading females from the Kawatiri and Kahika dispersals. These new dams are all very strong in maternal traits and fleshing which will help strengthen our programme in the next few years.

Further enhancing this build up of top genetics followed in 2000 with purchases at the Te Rangitumau dispersal. Four top females joined the Storth Oaks herd from here including the dam of Exocet.

In 2001 we have purchased extensively at the Shian dispersal where we secured eight top females and the Herd Sire 688 of Turiroa. Two weeks later we attended the Rakaiatai dispersal and brought 3 rising 3 year heifers. Two of these were twin daughters of F29 a star lot that we purchased at Kahika dispersal in 1999. F29 is by Rainmaker 340.

F29 along with Te Mania 2193 are the two females we have flushed over the summer. In 2002 we have flushed Q340 from our Shian purchases and Kahika F29 is due to go back to the centre now.

Since then we have purchased at the Matahiia and Kauere dispersals.

A special highlight has being purchasing two Turihaua Heifers at the Centenary Female sale in 2006. We are looking forward to what these genetics may add to our programme.
